One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven…TWELVE!
Welcome to the twelfth issue of “Deeds on Paper” guys! It’s me again, your dashing DEED-bonair (whatever that is), to bring to you the twelfth deed for twenty-oh-nine! So hope you guys like it, love it, hate it, whatever…just enjoy it! Okay? Heheh.

The twelfth card recommends that we help someone to quit smoking by leaving notes of encouragement and packs of chewing gum on their desks. I’m all up for this deed! I mean like, this is totally related to my chosen profession. Being a nursing student, I want nothing for my clients but to lead them to achieve health and wellness…and a first would have to be for them to STOP THE HABIT (if ever they’re into it), or else…or else I’m gonna kick their butts! Hahaha. Kidding!

SMOKING.
Smokers themselves say that it calms the nerves, relieves stress, alleviates tension and anxiety, boosts energy…and the list goes on. Talk about rationalization, huh? Haha! Well, yeah…it brings a lot of positive effects to them…to them…but behind it all, lies all its negative implications–to their loved ones, to the people around them, to the environment, to the world, and back to themselves again. I’m not gonna make a list of everything bad about smoking in this post because I know you know ‘em already. And guys, guys, guys…we’re not here to put THEM down. We’re here to support them in every step of the way, and help them make the change, encourage them to fight the urge, and lead them to doing the right thing.
Do you really think they’re gonna listen to you and that they’re gonna do something if you’ll just keep nagging and nagging all over again about how WRONG smoking is? For a change, let’s not focus on their negative behaviors. Disregard the negatives for the meantime. Provide them with solutions instead. Let’s help them realize what’s RIGHT. Like what’s written on the card, give notes of encouragement. Leave them a pack of chewing gum. And as they slowly make progress, acknowledge their positive behaviors. Give them a pat on the back, flash them a smile, talk to them. That way, we’re not putting them down. We’re helping them cope…raising them UP.
My message to smokers: Try to fight the habit! We’re here at your side…in full support, believing in you, and knowing that YOU CAN DO IT.
Do us a favor.
Do the millions of people around you a favor.
Do the world a favor.
Do yourselves a favor.

*P.S. The rationale behind the indication of chewing gum if you’re a smoker is for it to at least suppress the urge. Since you’re already chewing on something, your oral needs (as in the oral stage of Sigmund Freud’s Psychosexual Theory) will somehow be satisfied in a way, and your mind will somehow become at peace because of it, thus pushing the thoughts of “huffing and puffing on those cancer sticks” off of your head.
